Program Overview

The Foundational Year

All engineering students at the ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ and approved transfer schools follow a common curriculum in their first year of study.

This foundational year includes courses in Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Computing, English for Engineers, Engineering Mechanics, and an Introduction to the Engineering Profession. In March of the foundational year, students select their preferred engineering discipline and choose between the Traditional and Co-operative Education (Co-op) streams, both with identical academic requirements.

Most Co-op programs include one fall work term (September to December), one winter work term (January to April), and three summer work terms (May to August). Because Co-op students are engaged in both work and study year-round, they are considered full-time students for the entire academic year (July 1 to June 30).

Structure of the Co-op Program

Students in the Co-op Program complete two academic years before starting their first work term — that’s halfway through their degree! Afterward, they alternate between academic semesters and work terms.

Due to accreditation requirements set by CEWIL and department course schedules, any changes to work term sequences are subject to specific regulations and require approval from the Co-op office. Students may not alter the sequence without consultation, and only under exceptional circumstances.
