Applying for + Accepting a Job
The co-op office is here to help you find an acceptable co-op position.
When considering how many jobs you need to apply to, keep an open mind but only apply to jobs that you would be willing to take if offered. Consider work term length, job location, and job level when applying.
The number of jobs you apply to will vary from student to student, and will depend on factors such as the kinds of jobs you are applying to, the duration of your work term, and the experience you already possess.
Ensure you meet minimum qualifications requested for the position (e.g., if driver license requested, or job involves rotation work, do not apply unless you have a license or are able to do rotation work).
Jobs found inside campusBRIDGE
We run a continuous recruitment process on campusBRIDGE. Jobs are posted as they come in, interviews booked as the employers are ready, and offers could be made immediately after interviews.
Please carefully review positions prior to applying. Jobs within campusBRIDGE will indicate the appropriate discipline and work term they are recruiting for. They will also include the length of the co-op, either 4 months, 8 months, or 12 months.
When reviewing job postings remember the 3 Ls: Length, Level, Location. Applying out of scope, such as to a job located outside of metro-Edmonton when you have no sincere intention of relocating, can negatively impact your reputation with employers and have consequences on your co-op program. Keep in mind:
- Length: Do not misrepresent your availability; clearly state the duration of your work term on your resume and apply accordingly.
- Please remember that you may not apply for longer work terms than what you are scheduled for (eg. 8 months instead of 4, 12 instead of 8). You are expected to work within the framework of your program. Please refer to the Resequencing Rules and Considerations for more information.
- Level: Jobs are only eligible for the listed work term levels.
- Location: Relocation and accommodation will likely be the responsibility of the student unless otherwise noted in the job posting.
- Bonus L: Licence! Driver’s licence or vehicle requirements are usually stated in the posting. If you are unsure, please contact the Co-op Contact listed on the job.
If you have any questions about a posting contact the Employer Relationship Manager (ERM) listed as the Co-op Contact on the bottom of the job posting. If you are uncertain who is responsible for a company or job posting, please contact the Engineering Co-op Office at engineering.co-op@ualberta.ca.
Why does a job posting say I have to apply via both campusBRIDGE and the company's website?
Some companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS) as part of their recruitment process. To be considered for opportunities with these companies, you must submit your application using the company's ATS.
Engineering Co-op Students must also apply on both for tracking purposes and to allow the employer to offer or rank you. Please note that the Engineering Co-op Office may also send an applicant packet to the company through campusBRIDGE, in addition to the applications submitted directly to the company via their ATS.
Understanding Work Term Level
The Work Term Level number (WT1, WT2, WT3, WT4, WT5) on each job posting indicates the work term(s) for which the job posting is appropriate. DO NOT apply to jobs that don't match your current work term level.
If you are in a more junior level but have advanced qualifications (another degree, a trade, or relevant work experience), you may apply upwards as long as your skills correlate with the job requirements.
If you apply for a job that is below your current work term level and are placed in the role, there is a chance it will NOT count for your co-op work term. In that event, you would be expected to work at the accepted position and would have to resequence to attain the work term.
If you think there may be an error in the work term level of a posting contact the Co-op Contact listed at the bottom of the job posting.
Interviewing for jobs within campusBRIDGE
Employers are encouraged to book interviews via the Co-op Office, but some may contact students directly. If you do receive an interview directly, please inform the Co-op Contact listed on the job posting. Should you be invited to an interview after you have already been placed, decline and advise the Co-op Contact. Once you have accepted an offer of employment, you can not attend further interviews.
If you interview for a job and find a large disparity from what you read in the posting and wish to be removed from consideration, reach out to the Co-op Contact listed on the job posting. You need to contact the ERM right away, ideally within 24 hours of the interview. You must have a compelling reason to be removed as an employment candidate. If your request is approved, it will not count as a decline.
Jobs found outside campusBRIDGE
Students are expected to conduct a personal job search concurrent to the internal co-op recruitment process. If you find a position, please inform us as soon as possible so we can review and approve the opportunity. Track your own job search with the tracking sheet available in the . Jobs found independent of the co-op recruitment must meet requirements as outlined below.
The minimum requirements for acceptable co-op jobs vary depending on the work term:
Work Terms 1 & 2:
- Engineering-related
- Labour or maintenance jobs are acceptable
Work Term 3:
- Discipline-related
Work Terms 4 & 5:
- Discipline-related
- Should involve working with engineers
A job is considered engineering-related if it provides the student with:
- an opportunity to gain understanding of and/or personal involvement in the practical application of engineering; and/or
- exposure to an environment of engineering practice that encourages the development of professional conscience, responsibility, maturity, and judgement.
defines the "practice of engineering" as:
"…reporting on, advising on, evaluating, designing, preparing plans and specifications for or directing the construction, technical inspection, maintenance or operation of any structure, work or process
- that is aimed at the discovery, development or utilization of matter, materials or energy or in any other way designed for the use and convenience of humans, and
- that requires in that reporting, advising, evaluating, designing, preparations or direction the professional application of the principles of mathematics, chemistry, physics or any related applied subject…”
A job is considered discipline-related if it meets the above criteria for an engineering-related job and is related to the student's engineering discipline.

Difficulty finding a job
Each semester, we will continue to develop and add co-op opportunities until all students are placed, or until the beginning of the second month of that semester if students remain unplaced.
- Winter Work Term job postings will be added until early February
- Summer Work Term job postings will be added until early June
- Fall Work Term job postings will be added until early October
If your work term should have started already but you don’t have a job yet, we encourage you to continue your job search both on and through independent means. You can track your own job search with the tracking sheet available in the .
The expectation is that you will continue your job search until the dates listed above. After that time, should you not be placed, decisions will be made about a waived work term, resequencing or, in the case of a second waived work term, a move to the traditional program. We understand that this makes it very challenging to make decisions such as where to live, what to do if you don't get a job, and/or registering for classes.
Please contact the co-op office if you have any questions or concerns.
NOTE: Students cannot have WKEXP905 waived and would be required to resequence.
Accepting a Job
Inside campusBRIDGE
Students will have 48 hours (excluding weekends, holidays, and university closures) to respond to an offer. Should you fail to respond in time, the offer is automatically declined and extended to the next ranked candidate. The Co-op Office is unable to extend the offer deadline. Students are expected to check their UºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ email and rankings in campusBRIDGE frequently. Failure to respond to an offer in time will be considered a decline.
Students are expected to accept offers for jobs to which they have applied. Should you decline more than one offer, you will be required to resequence if you do not find a suitable placement for the term. This may mean extending your degree beyond your anticipated completion date. Once you accept an offer of employment, do not continue your job search either within or outside of campusBRIDGE. Students are expected to honour accepted offers (verbal or written) and there may be serious consequences for not doing so. Be sure to contact the ERM with any questions you may have about an offer prior to accepting.
Occasionally, employers who post jobs on campusBRIDGE will send offers outside campusBRIDGE. In these cases, students must contact the co-op office upon accepting or declining an offer.
Outside campusBRIDGE
We also encourage you to look outside campusBRIDGE for work. Check out these resources to assist you in finding a job. If you find a position, please inform us as soon as possible so we can review and approve the opportunity. Track your own job search with the tracking sheet available in the .
Rescinding an application
You may be able to cancel an application up until the deadline date posted in .
To rescind an application, go to: Engineering Co-op/Applications and locate the job you want to cancel. Select the "Cancel Application" button and it will be cancelled.
Some applications will go to employers immediately upon submission depending on the application method chosen by the organization. Carefully review positions prior to applying. If you have any questions, the Employer Relationship Manager is listed on the bottom of the job posting.
