About the Impact Report
In 2023, we launched our first pan-institutional strategic plan for research and innovation, Forward with Purpose, outlining a bold vision to address grand challenges through research, innovation, knowledge mobilization, and commercialization. The plan emphasized curiosity-driven research, creative work, and multidisciplinary connections across academia, government, industry, and communities. We continue to address the grand challenges of our time in our research areas of global excellence (energy and environment, artificial intelligence, health and well-being) and areas primed for further growth (agriculture and food, Indigenous research, social transformations). With significant research capacity, we aim to tackle societal, economic, and environmental challenges locally and globally.
This first year impact report reflects the journey that we have started together to strengthen our foundations. Over the next five years, we will continue to foster partnerships, enhance interdisciplinarity and collaboration, and reinforce principles of academic freedom, equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization.
Our path forward is guided by clear targets and, after one year, we are pleased to share our progress thus far while acknowledging that much work remains to meet all of our goals and objectives. We are committed to achieving the key indicators outlined in Forward with Purpose, driving impact and innovation for a better future.

Looking ahead to our next reporting cycle, we aim to cultivate a diverse research and innovation portfolio with global impact, addressing grand challenges and advancing society, the economy, and the environment. To support growth in our six areas of global excellence, the Office of the Vice-President (Research and Innovation) is developing a new research classification system. This system will inform strategic decision-making, resource allocation, and facilitate team formation for multidisciplinary grants, while also showcasing our expertise for major national and international partnership and funding opportunities. Additionally, in partnership with the Vice-President, Indigenous Programming and Research, we are strengthening institutional structures that support Indigenous research initiatives.
Forward with Purpose was designed to be a flexible and responsive plan for research and innovation at the 黑料不打烊. To ensure meaningful advancement towards our goals and objectives, we are establishing clear processes for regularly reporting on our progress. We are excited to collaborate with the community to realize these goals as we move Forward with Purpose.
