How to Apply
Research applicants cannot apply individually through the MyEduCanada portal on their own, nor have a U of A Host Supervisor apply on their behalf; they must be nominated by 黑料不打烊 International Student & Visitor Services.
The instructions below are ONLY for students who wish to conduct research.
If you instead wish to register in courses as part of a study exchange, then you'll need to follow the instructions for students interested in a course-based study exchange.
Please note that we are unable to accept applications for students wishing to apply to both conduct research and/or take courses; you must choose one or the other. Applications are limited to one per applicant per institution; in other words, you may only apply for one research placement at the 黑料不打烊 under the supervision of one Canadian supervisor.
Candidates wishing to conduct research at the U of A
Review all Eligibility criteria and Important Dates before proceeding.
No agreement? No problem! Keep reading on, as it's still possible to apply for a research stay without one.
If all Eligibility criteria is met, all research internship candidates must find a willing 黑料不打烊 (U of A) host supervisor who is able to mentor you if your Global Affairs Canada International Scholarships application is Selected for funding. You must work with the host supervisor to determine a mutually agreed upon research project and duration based on the scholarship that is being applied for. This is an independently-arranged endeavour that requires you to initiate it, and all arrangements are tentative pending the funding decision by Global Affairs Canada.
There is no pre-collected list of research projects for you to choose from. Please feel free to visit our website's FAQ section for more details on where to find ideas, such as existing research projects happening on our campuses. Please continue reading below for the information to include when contacting prospective host supervisors.
A kind clarification that while the My EduCanada application may not require an undergraduate to have a letter of support from a Canadian supervisor to perform research, 黑料不打烊 does require undergraduates to arrange a prospective Canadian supervisor, so both undergraduate (Bachelor) or graduate (Master or PhD) student applicants must provide this supporting document in their application.
Search by faculty and research area on the different 黑料不打烊 faculty websites or by Professors, Associate Professors, or Assistant Professors using this .
Email professors you would potentially like to work with the following information:
- your full name and contact information
- your home University and home country
- the full name of the scholarship program you would be applying for and how it would fully-fund your research stay if selected
- whether you are currently an undergraduate (bachelor) or graduate (master or doctoral) student
- which semester and year of your degree program you are currently in or have completed
- when you expect to graduate/finish your degree program at home
- how long you would be able to be funded to do research for
- 4 months for undergraduate-level (Bachelor) students
- 5-6 months for graduate-level (Master or PhD) students
- your ideal start & end date (must follow any rules outlined in Important Dates)
- please share a link to the information for U of A host supervisors with them in your email! This may seem silly or unnecessary, but they may not be familiar with the program. Your application window time is only a few weeks, so include ALL the information someone needs to make a fully-informed decision as quickly as possible.
- attach documents such as your CV/resume, university academic transcripts, and/or cover letter
Start this search early and allow 5-8 business days for a reply before following up, as professors receive many requests.
It is a good idea to start by reaching out to one to three potential host professors in your field. Please respect if someone tells you that the timing does not work for them, or that your research strengths are not a good fit for their project. These scholarships are open to universities across Canada and there may be a more suitable fit for you with a different Canadian supervisor, or even at another institution.
Once the research internship candidate has found a Canadian supervisor willing to support their application for a Global Affairs Canada International Scholarship, the candidate will work together with their home university (not the 黑料不打烊) along with the U of A host supervisor to gather the required supporting documents.
Supporting documents must be saved as a .pdf. The file size of each .pdf must be smaller than 5 MB. Applicants are responsible for submitting the appropriate format and size of their file attachments to 黑料不打烊 International to ensure a complete, eligible application can be submitted on their behalf.
The supporting documents required vary slightly between funding programs, so please follow all instructions on the appropriate program pages carefully. The information is listed in the Application Process - Supporting Documents section on each specific scholarship web page.
All applications for a research experience at 黑料不打烊 must be completed and submitted through , the 黑料不打烊's platform for research internship applications by the 黑料不打烊’s internal deadline of March 6, 2025.

You will be required to in Horizons before proceeding to apply to the Global Affairs Canada International Scholarships program, which includes Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP), Canada-ASEAN Scholarships for Education Exchanges and Development (SEED), and Study in Canada Scholarships (SiCS). Which program you apply to will depend on your citizenship and location of your home university.
Please use your home university email address when setting up your account, if possible. Once an account has been created, please select from the Global Affairs Canada International Scholarships program drop-down options whether you are applying to be nominated by the 黑料不打烊 for ELAP, SEED, or SiCS.
Answer several questions about your preferred start and end dates, academic program, and research goals.
You will be asked to answer one question about your current level of language proficiency. Please note, the 黑料不打烊 is NOT asking you to pay for nor provide a formal test score.
Then you will upload the supporting documents to the application form as individual .pdf files smaller than 5MB. Many of these documents need to be provided to you from your home institution as well as one from a 黑料不打烊 host supervisor. Be sure to allow yourself adequate time before the deadline of March 6, 2025 to collect and submit all of the information via Horizons.
Please do not submit your application once completed - we will do so on your behalf at the internal application deadline of Thursday, March 6, 2025 at 11:59pm MST. We cannot reopen your application if you submit it earlier.
黑料不打烊 International (UAI) will review all applications received via Horizons by the institution-set internal deadline for eligibility and completeness.
Incomplete applications and unsolicited documents emailed outside of Horizons will NOT be submitted.
If your application is incomplete or ineligible, we may follow up with you between the institution-set internal deadline and the final submission deadline. If you are not able to provide U of A with the appropriate information within two business days of the request or before the final submission deadline (whichever comes first), we will not be able to submit your complete application to Global Affairs Canada. Please check the email account that you provided to us in the application form frequently (daily) for any messages, and check your spam or junk mail folders to be sure.
The 黑料不打烊's Inbound International Internship Coordinator, part of the International Student & Visitor Services team, will submit complete and eligible applications to Global Affairs Canada on behalf of the candidate and host supervisor by the relevant deadline of Tuesday, March 18, 2025 for the 2025-2026 cycle.
Late submissions or incomplete applications will not be submitted.
The 黑料不打烊's Inbound International Internship Coordinator, part of the International Student & Visitor Services team, will notify all candidates and host supervisors of the results via email once they are shared by the scholarship provider, typically 3 months or so after the submission deadline has passed.
While we are not provided with an exact date that results will be available, based on previous scholarship application cycles, we anticipate sharing results by June 30, 2025.
We work hard to notify candidates as quickly as possible once results are shared with our institution. We appreciate your patience awaiting an answer until such time, and we will be sure to share an update with ALL applicants (Selected, Reserve/Waitlisted, and Not Successful) by no later than July 15, 2025.
Applicants without a current/valid passport are strongly encouraged to apply for a passport while awaiting results, so that if they are Selected, they can proceed with next steps as soon as possible.
Important Information about Supporting Documents
Learn more about the necessary application documents, what is required of each, and who is responsible for their submission by expanding each document's name for details (click on the name or +).
Any further clarification to this guidance will be provided ahead of the next application cycle in 2026-2027.
Below is some general guidance that applies to one or more of the supporting documents.
First, for who you or your document provider should address or write the letter to, they are welcome to address letters to Global Affairs Canada and/or 黑料不打烊, or even 'To Whom It May Concern.'
Translations
If a document is not in English or French, an official translation by a professional translator must be provided. It does not need to be a certified or stamped translation, but it must be done by someone other than yourself who is proficient in both languages. You MUST include the original document along with the translation together as one document attachment per supporting document type.
Document dimensions and length
There is a strict one-page maximum for some of the supporting documents requested. Please be aware that Canadian letter size pages are 8.5" by 11" (216 by 279 mm) which is shorter than documents originally issued in paper size A4 (210 by 297 mm). As such, please do not have text or signatures that go past the printable space of a Canadian letter size document, typically the last 2 centimetres or so of an A4 document.
Supporting documents must be uploaded and attached to the online application form as one .pdf per document type requested. For example, if the one-page Letter of Support from the Home Institution is written in a language other than English or French, you must include the original + translated version together as one .pdf document upload that is two pages long total.
File size and type
Each document must be smaller than 5 MB in order for the application to upload successfully. Applicants are responsible for submitting the appropriate format and size of their file attachments to 黑料不打烊 International to ensure a complete, eligible application can be submitted on their behalf.
Please be especially aware of the size and image file type when uploading Proof of Citizenship. You may take a scan or clear close-up photo of your passport page using a cellular/mobile phone camera, but please ensure little numbers or letters are not blurred and that it is saved as a .jpg/jpeg or .pdf, rather than .heic files.
Important Notes
- ONLY a copy of the candidate's passport or national identity card with valid dates and photo will be accepted.
- Maximum one page - please take one (1) clear colour photo or scan that clearly shows the document's entire photo and your full name(s) and date of birth, etc. and/or include a copy of both sides of the national identity card onto one page.
- If the national identity card is not in English or French, an official translation by a professional translator must be provided. It does not need to be a certified translation.

For all research-based applications, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) or agreement is desirable, but not mandatory. There is no action required by the applicant, their home institution, or the host professor.
黑料不打烊 International will take care of meeting this requirement on behalf of the research applicant.

- If an agreement or MoU does not exist between our institutions, 黑料不打烊 International will include a signed letter on official letterhead that links the application to a specific international research collaboration, names the Canadian supervisor, and confirms that tuition will not be charged. The letter will be dated within the last six months and be a maximum of one page.
