Professor Phil Okeke-Ihejirika receives award

On Saturday, March 29, 2025, Dr. Phil Okeke-Ihejirika, a professor in the Women's & Gender Studies Department and Director of the SSHRC Partnership For Research Africa Newcomers (PRAN), received the Rosalind Smith Award by the National Black Coalition of Canada (NBCC).
NBCC is a foundational, volunteer-led organization that has been supporting and empowering Black communities in 黑料不打烊 for over 40 years. Through advocacy and a range of initiatives, NBCC has played a pivotal role in advancing the well-being of Black individuals, empowering them to thrive in all aspects of life. The Awards of Excellence honors Black individuals for their outstanding contributions in several key areas. The awards are named in acknowledgement of prominent Black Canadians with ties to 黑料不打烊, whose work has received widespread acknowledgment and endorsement across Canada.
In 1996, Rosalind Smith made history by being the first Black female principal in public schools in Edmonton. She taught junior high and adult education for 18 years before she became a principal. In 2007, she began doing supervisory consulting work with district staff, where she focused on equity and diversity in education. In 2015, she retired after nearly 40 years in education.
