ࡱ> -/,g bjbjVV .r<r< |moooooo$@H9mm C34 Y0|1( : I completed my BSc. at the University of Saskatchewan in Biochemistry and then went to the University of Calgary where I completed my MSc in Biochemistry. My research in the MSc program resulted in a publication in the Journal of Biochem. Biophys Res. Commun and was focused on protein biochemistry and crystallography. I was specifically looking at the role of specific residues in the activity of -galactosidase in E.coli, an enzyme that converts lactose to glucose and galactose. I then wanted to pursue more translational research and therefore joined Dr. Evangelos Michelakiss lab and successfully defended my PhD in November of 2011 at the ϲ in the Department of Medicine specializing in Experimental Medicine, prior to continuing my training as a post-doctoral fellow at the ϲ till 2013 in the Department of Medicine, where I completed this project focusing on metabolism and epigenetics. I am currently doing my 2nd post-doctoral fellowship at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, continuing research on transcriptional regulation. My PhD focused on metabolic pathways in proliferative diseases including vascular remodeling diseases, like pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and cancer. Intriguingly, both cancer cells and proliferative smooth muscle cells that characterize PAH have a different metabolism than normal healthy cells that can be selectively targeted with metabolic drugs. Understanding the molecular pathways that are abnormal in cancer and PAH had been the focus of my PhD. My post-doctoral fellowship at the ϲ investigated the role of metabolism and epigenetics and my current fellowship is investigating the role of metabolism on RNA polymerase II transcriptional activity. I have presently been involved in 24 published articles, 2 book chapters and numerous abstracts presented locally, nationally and internationally on cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
