Doctor of Philosophy in Rehabilitation Science (Rehabilitation Medicine)

Entrance Requirements

For the MSc, the Faculty鈥檚 minimum admission requirements are a bachelor鈥檚 degree or a previous graduate degree in a rehabilitation discipline or related field with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the 黑料不打烊, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

For the PhD, the Faculty鈥檚 minimum admission requirements are a master鈥檚 degree in a rehabilitation discipline or a related field or an Honors BSc degree in rehabilitation or a related field with an admission GPA of at least 3.0 on the 4-point scale from the 黑料不打烊, or an equivalent qualification and standing from a recognized institution. The admission GPA will be calculated on the last 60 units of graded coursework completed, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.

Where applicable, applicants must provide proof of English Language Proficiency (refer to听).听 Any one of the following is acceptable:

  • a minimum TOEFL score of 100 with at least 25 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based) or equivalent;
  • a minimum overall IELTS score of 7.5 with at least 7.0 on each test band;
  • a minimum Pearson Test of Academic English score of 70, with at least 70 on each band.

Applicants must identify faculty member(s) within the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine who have agreed to supervise them.

Applicants are also required to submit the following

  • three reference letters from members of an academic community who are knowledgeable about the applicant鈥檚 academic and research potential and capabilities;
  • a current curriculum vitae; and
  • a research statement describing the research interests discussed with the potential supervisor, the applicant鈥檚 academic, vocational or research background, and career goals.

The application deadlines are April 15 for Fall entry and September 15 for Winter entry.

Program Requirements

Students are required to complete a minimum of 18 units in coursework and a thesis.

  • In the case of transfer into the PhD from the MSc program (prior to completing the MSc), a minimum of 3 units beyond the requirements for the MSc degree (15 units) must be completed for a minimum total of 18 units.
  • A minimum of 12 units is required when the applicant already holds an MSc degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized institution.

Coursework


听Students and their supervisors will develop a plan of study for the entire program and submit that plan of study for approval by the Rehabilitation Science Graduate Program Committee.

  • One 3-unit research analysis graduate-level course in research analysis
  • At least two 3-unit graduate-level elective courses
    • Elective courses will be based on the student鈥檚 research interests and selected in consultation with supervisory committee.
  • In cases where a student has not written a master鈥檚 thesis before entering the PhD program (e.g., course based master鈥檚 program, medical degree program), 听(3 units) is required, as an in-lieu-of thesis project.
    • This requirement may be waived if the final/capstone project is considered by the Rehabilitation Science Graduate Program Committee to be an 鈥渆quivalent piece of publishable research to offer in lieu.鈥 Requests to waive the in-lieu-of thesis requirement must be received no later than the end of the first term of study.

Note


When the student has completed a MSc of Rehabilitation Science at the 黑料不打烊, they will be granted an exception and will not take 听as part of their 12 credit course requirement, as long as 听was successfully completed as part of the student鈥檚 MSc course work at the 黑料不打烊.

Thesis


  • Registration in 900-level THES. Students must complete and defend a thesis.

Candidacy Exam


Students must successfully complete a two-part candidacy examination. The candidacy exam is normally held within two years of a student鈥檚 entry into the doctoral program, and should be complete before the student commences their doctoral research work.

Professional Development and Ethics Requirements


Students are required to fulfill the GPS Professional Development Requirement听and the GPS Ethics and Academic Citizenship Training Requirement.

Residence Requirement


The minimum period of residence is the equivalent of two academic years of full-time attendance at the 黑料不打烊.

Length of Program


The time required to complete the PhD program will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken. In general, the PhD program will take a minimum of three years to complete. The maximum time to complete the PhD program as set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is six years.
