BAA: Can you tell us about your current job? What kind of work are you doing?

Janine: I'm a financial solutions consultant for a software company, something I didn't know existed when I was finishing my degree. I work with large companies to help them understand how software can make their business run more smoothly from a financial perspective. A lot of companies have old legacy technology that makes the finance department run slowly, inefficiently, and in many cases, increases their chance of errors. With new financial technology, this becomes a lot easier, and finance and accounting staff can move away from reconciliations and data entry to work on value-add tasks.

BAA: Tell us a bit about your business, The Wealth Building Academy. How did you start it, and what was the inspiration behind it?

Janine: I've been involved in personal finance for 10 years! I started writing about my experience when I was in my undergrad, and it became a side hustle for me, which was a great way to bring in more income. As I articled and completed my designation, I kept on writing and speaking about money. Now, I've decided to turn my knowledge into something that can easily be digested for those looking to learn about investing. My company, , aims to educate and empower women to take control of their financial future through online education.

BAA: Do you have any advice for others looking to pursue entrepreneurship?

Janine: It's definitely not quick. I think many people think they are going to quit their job and become an entrepreneur, which can work, but for a lot of people, you need to build up your idea, audience, brand, and content over the course of years. It can be a grind, so it must be something you love - a lot of times, you'll give up your free time with family or friends, so make sure that it's worth it.

BAA: What was your career journey like post-graduation up to today?

Janine: Once I graduated, I spent time articling at one of the big four accounting firms. I've always kept my side hustle and other interests going, which is ultimately what led me to landing a job in the technology sector. My public speaking skills from my personal finance work were what landed me the job.

BAA: How have you been involved with the 黑料不打烊 School of Business as an alumna?

Janine: I've been involved as a speaker at the Network of Empowered Women conference over the years as well as hosted an Educated Wallet series with the 黑料不打烊 from a broader perspective. In addition, I've spent some time mentoring a few young grads and hope to continue to give back in the future!
